Writing Centers Around the World
The Middle East Technical University Academic Writing Center: A Story of Volunteers
Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey is a prestigious university counting 3 campuses (the main campus being Ankara) and 29.000 students, about 8.000 of which are graduate students. The Academic Writing Center of METU was established under the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) in 2001 and has since then served as a graduate writing center for Masters and PhD students as well as faculty and research assistants.
Tutoring in Qatar
The Writing Center (TWC) at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQ) began rather organically. VCUQ opened in 1998, and there was an English faculty member who recognized the need for additional English language writing support early on. The Peer Tutor program began in 2010. VCUQ was originally a female-only institution, and I believe it became coeducational in or around 2009. The vast majority of students are still Qatari female, and almost all the students at VCUQatar are multilingual.
IDC Herzliya Writing Center: The Story Behind Israel’s First Academic Writing Center
The Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya, located in the central Sharon region of Israel, not far from the Mediterranean coastline, has changed the face of Israeli academia, with its interdisciplinary approach and strong social commitment. It offers innovative and dynamic academic programs in law, business, government, computer science, communications, psychology, economics and sustainability. IDC’s Writing Center is currently in its eighth year of operation. In a sense we feel like pioneers in this field and hope that there will be more writing centers in higher education institutions in Israel.
South African Writing Centres: A Conversation with Dr. Rose Richards and Sharifa Daniels
Editor’s note: Recently I joined the South African Writing Centre’s group—and quickly realized I knew very little about the work being done by writing centers in their part of the world, or the challenges they face. Thankfully, Dr. Rose Richards and Sharifa Daniels were happy to share about both the SA WC group and the work they do together at Stellenbosch University. DR. ROSE RICHARDS The SA WC group is an informal body. It’s been around since the early 2000s. We’ve never formally constituted, preferring our independence. Also time and money are considerations with
#EstoyconEndil2014 and the Latin America Writing Center Association
In November, Violeta Molina-Natera, director of the Javeriano Writing Center in Colombia, sent out an invitation to the Writing Center Listserv to stand in social-media solidarity with participants of an academic conference in Venezuela, who are facing considerable economic and political challenges. Writing and Communication Center at the New Economic School, Moscow
My name is Kara Bollinger, and I am the Assistant Director of the Writing and Communication Center at the New Economic School (NES) in Moscow, Russia. Our writing center is just now turning one-year-old and is one of only two writing centers in Russia. So, the Director of the WCC, Olga Aksakalova, and I are excited to join the conversation on CWCAB. We’re sure to have questions (and hopefully insights) in the coming months, but for now we want to say “hey.” Students at our school are enrolled in one of three programs: Bachelor's in Economics
